Vado Ligure school - Embracing an ecological environment

As the school was meant to arise in an industrial area, I designed a courtyard building to create a loop-structure embracing a protected green ecological core in the middle of a polluted area. The loop is open to provide access to the courtyard. Half of the loop hosts the primary and secondary school programs, and the other half hosts an institutional area. The outer part of the building, facing the street, is dedicated to school utilities (labs, offices, canteen, services, etc), while the classrooms are located in the inner part, overlooking the courtyard through large windows. Civic services offered to the community in the institutional area include a public auditorium, a library and a school of music. Starting from the school entrance and ending at the auditorium entrance, the loop grows in height progressively as a climbing spiral. The childish dimension of the school turns into a monumental volume in the institutional area, reminding of a child’s growth to become an adult.
